While you may want to be as self sufficient as possible when it comes to your plumbing, there will be times when you really should give in and call a professional plumber for help. If you are like most home owners and you have the basic knowledge about plumbing, then you want to know at what point you should stop trying to take care of things on your own and call out a plumber.
You may be able to unclog simple clogs, but don't want to deal with big ones
If you have a clogged drain then you can try dealing with things on your own. There are a number of things you can try to free up a clog in a drain. You can try using a plunger first. You can also try scooping out debris that's in the drain if it is near the surface and you can reach it with a tool that you can fit in there. If you can't get the clog to free up yourself, then the plumber may be necessary.
You may be able to unclog certain pipes
A common area to have one of your sinks clog up is in the curved pipe that's generally about a foot under your sink. It is called a p-trap due to its shape that makes it look quite similar to the letter "p". There are some steps you need to follow if you are going to attempt this clog on your own. You need to shut off the water to that faucet and you'll need to get right under the sink to remove the pipe, clean it out and reinstall it. Putting fresh plumbing tape on the connecting ends is something you want to remember.
You'll want to call out a plumber for deep clogs
If you have clogs anywhere else in the plumbing that go beyond the surface levels, such as deep in the main supply lines or in the sewer lines, then it's best to call a plumber out. If you have no experience in dealing with these types of clogs and you try to, you may find yourself in over your head. You don't want to put yourself in the position of needing to be without water until a plumber can come out because you did something wrong. You can also end up breaking pipes or causing other damage when you are experimenting.
